Why vinyl flooring is the right choice for your home

Vinyl flooring might seem too good to be true. When it first came to the US Market decades ago vinyl sheet was highly praised for durability, high water resistance qualities, affordability, and easy care. Now, thanks to modern technology, you can also add style and a high-end look to sheet vinyl floors.

Today, manufacturers can develop shockingly realistic tiles and planks with embossing to add depth and dimension. No more flat images that you may remember from decades ago! There are wood, stone, and other distinctive designs in an almost unlimited number of colors and patterns.

Style without sacrificing savings

Whether standard or luxury vinyl, it all follows trends, with a wide assortment of colors, designs, and styles. Right now, wood floors are trending, and that's expected to last at least 15 years. The current hot looks are gray floors, barn door wood, whitewashed planks, and all light woods, such as blond, white oak, and light hickory. You can get them all with vinyl. Stone adds architectural interest, but quarried slabs can be pricey. While you once saw stone mostly on countertops, it's now on floors. Marble baths are currently a hot trend. Tile colors range from metallics to pattern play to even sculptured and textured appearances. You can get all this in vinyl flooring.

Some of the more technical things you should know

  • Thickness impacts durability and even the type of installation. The overall vinyl thickness ranges from 2 mm to 8 mm, and heavier is best for busy rooms.
  • The wear layer is a clear melamine sheet at the top. It is critical to durability. It protects the floor from scratches and scuffs. A wear layer of 20 mils is best for heavily trafficked rooms, but you can also get it in 6 or 12 mils.
  • Installation is either glue-down or floating floor. Vapor barriers are sometimes recommended. The floating floor is an installation technique, not a flooring material. The quality of the flooring material will affect the installation; a too-thin material will make subfloor imperfections telegraph through to the surface. With floating floors, pieces click together like a mat. They then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue. Subfloors need to be clean, debris-free, dry, and level. Sometimes installers will even have to sand to level out the floor.
